New year, new ideas...

New year, new ideas...

We can safely assume (dangerous to assume I know, but lets plough on...) that if you're reading this you love your home, are interested in interior design, and are always looking for new ideas to make you love your home even more.

The joy of working somewhere like Wells Reclamation is that we are constantly surrounded by stuff desperately waiting to be upcycled, reclaimed or used creatively; and so there is an inordinate amount of time spent thinking about how to do this. springlaneThe benefit to you is that we've generally already done the thinking and so we can pass the knowledge on. Time saved for you, brain exercise for us...it's a win-win.

So what knowledge can we share today?? What stuff do we have that can make your home that little more loveable??

Imagine that pretty loft conversion you've been considering for a while. That great idea for generally unused space at the top of the house - probably accessed twice a year, once to retrieve the Christmas decorations and again to return them. But what can you use to make it that little more interesting? You've got the basic plans, bedroom space and a bathroom. Stud walls, sky light etc. First you could bring in some extra light with a window in the gable end. Our solid wood round windows are ideal for this. They are not only unusual, but practical and a good price. We have customers who use them for this very purpose or for 'Hobbit' houses, house boats etc.

You could consider making the bathroom a little different. Instead of the bog standard (excuse the pun) sink and pedstal, you could have one of baby butler sinks (available instore for only £65), sitting on top of a lovely teak cupboard (these start from about £175). sinkandcupboardThis idea hides the pipe work, gives you a lovely interesting corner to your small but perfectly formed bathroom, and extra storage.

Consider your new fireplace. You want a lovely simple fireplace for your swanky new woodburner in your even swankier country retreat. But you also want to make it look more in keeping with the age of the house. fireplaceThis idea (pictured) from dovre.co.uk is just what I imagined. Lovely reclaimed oak beam, wooden corbels to support the oak mantle, striking woodburner sitting on a flagstone hearth. Some well considered accessories. Quite breathtaking. New but old!

Finally, since the influx of visitors over the Christmas break, you've become ashamed of your perfectly functional but distinctly stylefree hallway. You come in, kick your shoes onto the heap, the kids throw bags, coats etc on the floor, and don't get me started on the door mat...(this is like 'interiors' therapy for me). What can be done??? You need to organise those shoes. Options can be a huge sturdy basket or wooden box. Simple as it still allows the speed of the aforementioned heap, but keeps the shoes contained. Not great for those Jimmy Choos (we can all dream), but ideal for school shoes, boots etc. You could go one step (it's pun heaven today) further and have a lovely reclaimed blanket box in polished oak or pine. It also serves as somewhere to sit when removing the Choos. The ultimate (space dependant obvs) could be a settle or bench with under-seat storage. Add a lovely coordinating box cushion and ta da! You also need lots of lovely stylish hooks for all the coats and bags (admit it, you have hundreds), and don't forget the door mat!!

So, there we are. Hours of thought and consideration put together in one tidy little essay just for you! Get cracking..
