A hardwood is defined as timber obtained from broad-leaved, flower bearing trees. Hardwood trees are deciduous except in the warmest regions, whereas softwood trees are coniferous. For example, balsa (a hardwood) is softer than most softwoods, while yew (a softwood) is harder than alot of hardwoods.
